OVERVIEWThe village of Aviemore lies just north of the centre of
Scotland in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park (The largest National Park in the UK) and stands at 700ft above sea level. It is an all year round destination, with a wide range of winter and summer activities to choose from, such as canoeing, hill walking, low-level walking, climbing, mountain biking and is also one of the country’s top ski areas. It is ‘alive’ most of the year and Is certainly one of, if not the number one spot for outdoor activities anywhere in Scotland. |
Close to Aviemore are the Cairngorm Mountains, 5 of the highest mountains in the UK can be found here and there are plateau's climbing over the 1000+m, Glaciers have gouged deep, high altitude valleys and corries on the plateau, it is the highest & most extensive range of arctic mountain landscape anywhere in the British Isles.
At the foothills of the range is one of the UK’s biggest tracts of natural & largely untouched woodland. They contain fragments of the ancient Caledonian pine forest which is home to a variety of animals, including the rare and protected Capercaillie and other rare animals including the pine marten, wild cat, osprey and ptarmigan. These forests and the heather moorland, which covers over 40 per cent of the park, provide excellent cross country skiing and offer walking with jaw dropping scenery without the need to go out onto the hills themselves.
