Ptarmigan Arctic Hare Red Deer Osprey
OVERVIEWThe Cairngorms became Scotlands second National Park on the 01st September 2003, it is also the largest National Park in the British Isles. The area features the highest, coldest and snowiest plateau in the UK and is also home to five of the nine highest mountains.
One of the outstanding joys of this precious area is the wildlife and its habitats. The Cairngorms National Park is home to a diverse and spectacular range of species that either make this their home all year round, or return annually after seasonal migration. | Aviemore
|
The Park is also noted for its Caledonian pine forests that once covered vast areas of the Highlands. Today, however, only 1% of the original forest survives, which are home to much of the areas wildlife.
However, its not just in the forests that you will see spectacular animals: the wetland areas, marshes, lochs and rivers all have thriving and various species breeding throughout the year.
A large number of bird species can be seen in the Cairngorms, the most famous being the Osprey, which in 1916 was considered extinct, but is now a notable conservation success, not just in the park, but can now be seen throughout many areas of Scotland during the summer months.
Other birds especially important to the Cairngorms include the capercaillie, the black grouse, corncrakes, hen harriers, dotterels, crested tits, cross bills and birds of prey such as red kites, peregrine, buzzards and golden eagles.
On the high plateaus, birds such as the dotterel, snow bunting, ring ouzel, red grouse and ptarmigan can be seen.
The Cairngorms also have a rich variety of mammals, which include the elusive wildcat, the otter and the red squirrel. Red deer, roe deer, mountain hare, the fox, badger and pine marten are also present in the Cairngorms, as well as the only herd of reindeer in the UK.
The above mentioned species are just a short snipet of the 200 species you may find in the National Park, all you need is a keen eye, patience and enthusiasm.
This weekend, with the help of our professional wildlife experts, we will help you to discover some of the spectacular wildlife in the park.
Although we cannot assure you of seeing specific species, as weather and other factors can prevent sightings, it is hoped, not assured, that in the very least you will see, pine martens, badgers, red deer, osprey, buzzards and the reclusive capercaillie, plus others.
