French gear manufacturer Petzl has unveiled its new headtorch featuring its reactive lighting technology.
The company said the NAO features two LED beams that automatically adjust depending on what the user is doing, with minimal manual adjustment.

Avalanche forecasts now available on free text service

Walkers, climbers and mountaineers heading for Scotland’s mountains this winter can now get regular avalanche information sent direct to their mobile phones.
The sportscotland Avalanche Information Service, which posts daily information about snowpack conditions & avalanche risk, has expanded its service with a free text forecast facility.

Walkers stretchered from fells after suffering broken legs

A walker was rescued after slipping and breaking her leg near England’s highest waterfall.
The woman, in her 60s, was with her husband when she fell near the foot of Cautley Spout in Cumbria.
Kirkby Stephen Mountain Rescue Team was alerted after the incident on Saturday and went to the walker’s aid.

Opponents of a proposed windfarm in the Highlands welcomed a local council’s rejection of the plans.
Members of the Highland Council’s south planning application committee went against their officer’s recommendation to approve the Allt Duine development, in the Monadhliath Mountains.

A mountain rescuer paid tribute to a former colleague who died in a climbing accident.
Michael Machell, a one-time member of the Langdale Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team, was killed in the incident in California at the weekend. The 23-year-old was a former student at the Ambleside campus of the University of Cumbria, where he graduated with a first-class honours.

Outdoor campaigners have criticised councillors who plan to make a site visit to a controversial windfarm site – by going to a railway more than 10 miles away.
The John Muir Trust urged Highland Council members to pull on their boots and walk on the actual site of the proposed Allt Duine windfarm in the Monadhliath Mountains.

A man was airlifted from a hill after injuring his leg in a slip.
The 69-year-old was descending Dumgoyne in the Campsie Fells north of Glasgow when he injured himself.
Lomond Mountain Rescue Team was alerted at about 2.40pm yesterday, Sunday, by police and members went to the aid of the walker.

CIC Hut will reopen fully tomorrow after storm damage repairs

A climbing hut under Ben Nevis’s north face will reopen tomorrow after repairs to the building needed when recent hurricane-force winds blew off part of the roof. The Charles Inglis Clark memorial hut, known to mountaineers as the CIC hut, will be fully open again following work by volunteers to put the shelter back in order.

A man was airlifted from Britain’s highest mountain after falling 60m. The 57-year-old fell about 200ft on Ben Nevis yesterday, Saturday.
Police at Fort William were alerted about 11am and Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team went to the man’s aid.

Repairs complete on flood-damaged path below Wainwright's favourite fell

A footpath leading to the late Alfred Wainwright’s favourite fell has been repaired after it was damaged by a landslide during the 2009 Cumbria floods.
The surface of the bridleway between Gatesgarth and Scarth Gap was washed away and walkers and mountain bikers tackling the route have had to find a way round the 30m gap in the path.

A climber is in intensive care after falling 300ft from a Highland mountain. The 19-year-old was airlifted to hospital after the incident in the Cairngorms yesterday.
Police were alerted about 12.20pm yesterday after the student, originally from the West Midlands but currently studying in Fort William, fell 90m from the Great Slab in Coire an Lochain in Cairn Gorm’s northern corries.

Conservation workers on a remote estate will be spared a regular nine-mile walk thanks to a charity grant that will help them buy a boat to reach the property.
Workers and volunteers on the John Muir Trust’s Li & Coire Dhorrcail on the Knoydart peninsula on the west coast of Scotland will use the £6,265 to provide a boat and moorings at Arnisdale.
